Pulmonary Fibrosis and Eye Problems

There is an alliance among all the body organs and they work in tandem to keep the body machinery running. So, if there is any disruption in any one organ then there are chances that the others might be affected too. We are here to understand the relation between Pulmonary Fibrosis and Eye Problems.

What is Pulmonary Fibrosis?

A lung disease which might cause eye problems is called pulmonary fibrosis. It happens due to the scarring of the lungs. The lungs get stiffer and it restricts breathing. The symptoms include shortness of breath, tiredness, loss of appetite, loss of weight and might also cause clubbed fingers due to lower levels of oxygen in the body.

How does it Affect the Eyes?

The Optometrist in Port Louis discusses that this condition might lead to several eye problems as well. Some of those are:

  1. Dry Eyes – This can be caused due to various other factors but certain diseases like pulmonary fibrosis can increase the chances. As the levels of oxygen become severely low so the eyes may also become drier. The gas exchange becomes impaired. Due to this some people use supplemental oxygen which leads to further dryness.
  2. Blurred Vision – Vision might also be compromised due to lesser levels of oxygen. There might be changes in the blood vessels of the eyes. The opticians in Mauritius further explained that the reduced levels of oxygen results in various ocular changes and one such condition is blurry vision.
  3. Cataracts – This is quite a common problem when people start aging. However, the risks of getting it go up if steroids are used. The Optometrist in Port Louis has pointed out that a steroid, Prednisone, might be prescribed for treating pulmonary fibrosis.

Treating Pulmonary Fibrosis

Proper treatment would be beneficial for reducing the symptoms and to slow down the rate of progression of the disease. Medicines, anti – fibrotic drugs and steroids are included in the treatment plan. Oxygen therapy and other breathing exercises may also be administered.
